Currently, REI is hosting a Handpicked Deals Sale through Nov. 2, and it’s not what you might expect. While many retailers are selling shorts and short-sleeved shirts at massively reduced prices now that summer is over, REI is taking a different approach, offering winter gear that you’ll actually want to use in the coming months. Everything from winterized ski helmets to down gloves is on sale, and you better believe that big brands like Patagonia are involved in the sale, and this fleece jacket at 50% off is one of the biggest standouts.
The Patagonia Re-Tool Jacket is now down to $99 as part of the limited-time sale. It’s a thick fleece jacket that feels soft to the touch and has a warm interior. REI doesn’t have an unlimited supply of these jackets, though, and the small size is already sold out. Even though the sale goes through until Monday, you can’t expect to definitely see your size in stock.

This jacket is made from a high-pile polyester fleece with a canvas-like weave, smartly blending softness and coziness with structural integrity. Like many jackets and hoodies, there is some elasticity at the hem and cuffs to keep out the cold, but the Re-Tool also does this around the collar for added warmth around the neck.
Though there is a black version of the jacket, the version on sale is in the El Cap Khaki color, which is a light tan that reminds me quite a lot of yak wool. It’s a very earthy tone that will go well with darkly colored pants or jeans and natural green or wine-colored beanies.

One shopper had quite a lot to say about the jacket’s versatility. “My go-to business casual 2nd layer; can use over a T-shirt, polo, button-down, as an alternative to a sport coat. So soft, light tan neutral color with blue trim goes with almost anything.” Another described it as “perfect” for “cool fall mornings.”
The Patagonia Re-Tool Jacket is $99 now through Nov. 2, or until it sells out. Patagonia on sale at REI usually does sell out, as it were, and the small size has already done so. Expect a few of the others to follow suit before the sale ends.
