Following the death of legendary actor Patrick Stewart at the age of 86, the late star will appear on the big screen one final time for Avengers: Doomsday.
The film, which will be released worldwide on December 18, will see Stewart reprise his role as Charles Xavier (also known as Professor X), the founder of the X-Men and a mutant with telepathy. This will be Stewart’s final film role, according to IMDb.
Doomsday will mark Stewart’s tenth appearance as Professor Xavier, following his debut as the character in X-Men (2000), followed by X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Logan (2017), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
According to a statement released by his family, the veteran actor died “yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.”
A subsequent statement from Marvel Studios following the announcement of Stewart’s passing said, “All of us at Marvel Studios are deeply saddened by the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart. Sir Patrick brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans, from “X-Men” to Logan to Avengers: Doomsday.“
“He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman,” the statement continued. “Our hearts go out to his wife Sunny, his children, his friends, and the countless fans around the world whose lives he touched with his art.”
The British actor, who was knighted Sir Patrick Stewart by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010, was cast in the comic book series Barbaric alongside Sam Claflin back in May, as reported by Deadline. The future of the project, particularly Stewart’s involvement, is currently unknown.
