19 Years Later, Emma Stone and Jonah Hill’s R-Rated Comedy Is One of HBO Max’s Most-Watched Movies in the World

Superbad is back on the charts 19 years after it hit theaters. The 2007 comedy was No. 8 on HBO Max’s worldwide movie chart on Oct. 27, according to FlixPatrol, which tracks streaming top 10 lists, and Collider reported that it’s one of the 10 most-watched movies on the service around the world.

Jonah Hill and Michael Cera play Seth and Evan, two high school seniors who are about to leave for different colleges and promise to bring the alcohol to a classmate’s party. The movie was the first film role for Emma Stone, who played Jules, and for Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who played Fogell, the kid whose fake ID says McLovin, according to Wikipedia. Mintz-Plasse was 17 during filming.

Written by Two Teenagers

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg started writing Superbad when they were seniors at Point Grey Secondary School in Vancouver. The two main characters share their first names.

Rogen was originally supposed to play Seth. Because of his age and size, he ended up as Officer Michaels, one of the two cops who take McLovin along for the night, with Bill Hader as his partner, Officer Slater. Greg Mottola directed the movie, and Judd Apatow produced it with Shauna Robertson.

Box Office and Reviews

Superbad was made for $17.5 million to $20 million. It opened at No. 1 at the U.S. box office in August 2007 with $33 million and held the top spot for a second weekend before the new Halloween took over, Collider noted.

It made about $121.5 million in the U.S. and roughly $170 million worldwide. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an 88% score from 207 reviews, and Roger Ebert titled his review “McLovin It.”

The fake ID caused trouble after the movie, too. The replica that came with the DVD looked so much like a real Hawaii driver’s license that Walmart pulled the DVD from its stores in Hawaii, according to Wikipedia.

Where the Cast Went Next

Stone has won the Oscar for Best Actress twice, for La La Land and Poor Things, and was nominated again for Bugonia, Collider noted. Hill was nominated for best supporting actor for Moneyball and The Wolf of Wall Street, and his 21 Jump Street passed Superbad as the biggest high school comedy at the U.S. box office.

Rogen and Goldberg kept working as a writing team on Pineapple Express, This Is the End and Sausage Party.

Where to Watch

Superbad is streaming on HBO Max. It’s rated R and runs 113 minutes.
