The TikTok account for Musk, an upcoming documentary that takes an unflattering look at current Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, has been permanently banned.
TikTok’s reasoning was “political-policy violations”, while the film’s producers were told that “some violations trigger immediate suspension”. This follows previous controversy from last month, when major social media platforms prevented the documentary from placing ads on their sites: while Google and Meta eventually their decision, TikTok did not, and X (formerly Twitter) has even refused to host ads for distributor Bleecker Street’s other films.
TikTok’s policy states that “political TikTok accounts” such as “Government, Politician, and Political Party accounts” are restricted and not allowed to use certain features; for example, there is no paid political advertising allowed on the platform. Musk, the world’s first and only trillionaire, was briefly a “special government employee” as part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but left in May 2025. Musk has not held a political job since.
“We allow commentary about political figures which may be critical, but remove content that crosses into severe harm.” reads the TikTok policy on Harassment and Bullying. It’s unclear if any of Musk‘s ads could reasonably be described as “cross[ing] into severe harm”, as TikTok declined to comment.
The timing of the ban, just one day after the documentary’s limited release in theaters, and right before it expands to about 500 screens across the United States, has raised concerns. Distributor Bleecker Street is appealing the ban, but given the lack of advertisements before the movie’s first expanded release, the damage may already have been done. The sprawling, nearly four-hour documentary notably points out the connection between Musk and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, who owns 15% of TikTok Us through Oracle. The film seeking to raise awareness about the social media suppression of Big Tech companies may have already become a victim.
