Tom Holland’s Video Game Movie Finds a New Audience on HBO Max

Four years on from its original release, Uncharted is levelling up on the streaming charts.

The Tom Holland-led film, directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom), has entered HBO Max’s global top 10 this week, starting on Monday, October 19, per data accumulated by FlixPatrol. Released in 2022, Uncharted is based on the video game franchise of the same name, developed by Naughty Dog, which debuted in 2007 with the PlayStation 3 game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

“Uncharted introduces audiences to street-smart Nathan Drake (Holland) and showcases his first treasure-hunting adventure with wisecracking partner Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg),” Sony’s official description states.

“Inspired by the acclaimed video game series, this action-adventure epic spans the globe and follows Nate and Sully as they embark on the dangerous pursuit of the greatest treasure never found while also tracking clues that may lead to Nate’s long-lost brother,” the teaser continues.

Alongside Holland and Wahlberg, Sophia Ali (Grey’s Anatomy, The Wilds), Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Last of Us), Rudy Pankow (Outer Banks, Reminders of Him), and Antonio Banderas (Shrek 2, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) co-star in Uncharted. Nolan North, who provides the voice and motion capture for Nathan Drake in the game series the movie is based on, makes a cameo appearance in the film as a nod to fans of the franchise.

Uncharted received a mixed-to-negative critical response, with a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the adaptation fared much better with fans, earning an 89% audience score and grossing over $400 million on a $120 million budget. This warm reception from fans of the original franchise, in addition to general audiences, enhanced by its success on streaming, even four years on from release, has kick-started a sequel for the film, which is currently in development as of 2023.
