Why This Could Be The First Ford GT To Sell For $1 Million At Auction

The classic American supercar’s value has skyrocketed this year, with several auction sales approaching the seven-figure threshold.

The original Ford GT is having a moment. The all-American supercar was created as an homage to Carroll Shelby‘s legendary GT40 program, which delivered four consecutive Le Mans wins from 1966 to 1969. A supercharged 5.4-liter V8 mated to a gated six-speed transmission allowed the GT to beat almost all of its contemporaries off the line with a zero-to-60 mph time of just 3.3 seconds. Its 205 mph top speed put it in the echelon of the day’s fastest road cars, most of which cost three times as much as the $140,000 GT.

Since the last of 4,000 or so total Ford GTs rolled off the assembly line in 2006, the base models have continually appreciated, with the greatest spikes occurring over short windows in time. According to data compiled by classic car insurer Hagerty since 2008, values for the most pristine models jumped from about $209,000 in 2013 to $375,000 in 2016. After a brief downturn to $337,000 in 2021, Concours-condition examples surged in value to $510,000. The most drastic spike, though, appears to be underway. Since April 2026, a string of landmark sales has lifted the value from $556,000 to $778,000.

This year’s base Ford GT hammer prices were led by a 2006 model with 661 miles, which sold at RM Sotheby’s on February 27, 2026 for $967,500. A 2006 with 477 miles brought $880,000 at a Mecum Auctions event on August 14, 2026, and a 2006 with just 14 miles sold for $847,000 at Mecum on May 16, 2026. A 2006 with 6,000 miles took $822,500 on Bring a Trailer on September 18, 2026, and a 2005 with 166 miles sold for $809,500 on Bring a Trailer on September 21, 2026.

Five Heritage-edition Ford GTs, featuring a blue and orange Gulf Oil livery, have all fetched $1 million this year at auction. The 2005 Ford GT seen here, which is currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer, may be the first base model to crack seven figures. There are just 32 miles on the odometer—lower than all but one of the examples listed above—and it’s already commanded a $750,000 bid.

Considering how the final moments of BaT’s online auctions generally unfold—the going price tends to skyrocket as sniping bidders ignite a fervor—there’s a very real chance that this will be the first base Ford GT to sell for over $1 million at auction.
