As we eagerly await the release of Godzilla Minus Zero, director Takashi Yamazaki is assembling the cast for his first English-language movie. Deadline reports that Sam Nivola (The White Lotus) and Nico Parker (How to Train Your Dragon) are set to join the cast of Grandgear, with Paul Giamatti (Star Trek: Starfleet Academy) also in talks to join the project.
What We Know About Grandgear
Yamazaki is directing from an original screenplay he wrote. J.J. Abrams is producing for Bad Robot along with Glen Zipper. The plot is being kept under wraps, but some brief test-footage shared at CinemaCon earlier this year featured a giant robot fighting a kaiju.
Production is expected to kick off in 2027, with Sony Pictures giving the film a February 18, 2028 release date.
Godzilla Minus Zero
Godzilla Minus One was an enormous success with its spectacular visual effects and emotional human storytelling, and the bar has been raised considerably for the sequel. By the sounds of things…Yamazaki has succeeded and then some with Godzilla Minus Zero.
Our own Jay Saint G absolutely loved it, but whether it eclipses the previous film will be up to you. “Is Minus Zero BETTER than Minus One? Well, that depends,” he wrote. “If you prefer a more cohesive human drama and a more Godzilla-centered movie, you’re going to prefer Minus One. If you want a more balls-to-the-wall Kaiju thriller, then you’re likely going to prefer Minus Zero. But one thing I will assure you: this is absolutely the best follow-up to any Godzilla movie EVER. No matter who you ask.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
The official synopsis for Godzilla Minus Zero: “War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.“
The film opens in Japan on November 3, which just so happens to be Godzilla Day, before beginning its North American theatrical release on November 6.
