2003 Horror Crossover Critics Hated Is Suddenly One of HBO Max’s Most-Watched Movies Before Halloween

In 2003, horror movie fans got to watch two iconic villains go to battle after they’d wanted to see them square off for years. Despite the dream moment finally coming to fruition, Freddy vs. Jason was panned by critics. Now, more than 23 years later, the film has become one of HBO Max’s most-watched movies as Halloween approaches.

‘Freddy vs. Jason’: The Horror Crossover That Just Found a New Audience on HBO Max

The website FlixPatrol posts daily top 10 lists of the most-viewed TV shows and movies on all of the major streaming services. On October 23, the website reported that a major horror crossover movie had suddenly become one of the top films on one of the most popular streaming options. According to the website, Freddy vs. Jason was the No. 5 film on HBO Max in the United States.

The film was one of several horror and horror-adjacent movies that were among HBO Max’s top titles in America that day. Backrooms, Coraline, Corpse Bride, Evil Dead Burn, and Scooby-Doo also made FlixPatrol’s list.

Critics Hated ‘Freddy vs. Jason’

Freddy vs. Jason currently sits with an underwhelming 42% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 214 reviews. While that figure is disappointing, it fails to show the full picture of how brutally the film was treated by professional critics.

When IGN published its review, it featured an excerpt that summarized its overall take on the film. “The Audience loses.” The 1.5/5 stars review also ended on a brutal note. “A big-budget blandness pervades every frame of this film; Freddy Vs. Jason isn’t just idiotic and unscary, it’s something even worse – utterly clueless and clumsy, a studio-skewed vision of what horror used to be.”

According to Metacritic’s summary of Village Voice’s Freddy vs. Jason review, that outlet was similarly brutal, calling it “about as threadbare as a favorite childhood plushy.” While Slant Magazine’s 1.5/5 star review called the movie “tolerable,” it also described it as an “instantly forgotten dud” with an ending that was “indicative of [its] laziness.”

‘Freddy vs. Jason’ Spent Years in Development Hell

In January 2026, JoBlo updated its article that chronicled the long road Freddy vs. Jason took to the big screen. Looking at the history makes it staggering that the film was ever produced at all. After all, when the idea first began to pick up traction, different companies owned the rights to the characters, making a crossover a near-impossibility at the time. After New Line Cinema acquired the rights to Jason Voorhees from Paramount, that removed a huge stumbling block, but was still only the beginning of additional struggles.

From the mid-’90s to the early-2000s, a long list of writers took a run at writing a script about Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees battling. According to reports, millions were spent on those efforts, most of which went nowhere. Fortunately for longtime fans of the film and new viewers who just discovered it on HBO Max, a script was finally approved, and the movie was released roughly 15 years after talks began.
