1999 Film, Starring Nicolas Cage, Called ‘Arguably Scorsese’s Most Under-Appreciated Film’ Turns 27

Nicolas Cage’s Bringing Out the Dead turns 27 today, marking another year for a Martin Scorsese film that struggled commercially. Released in US theaters on October 22, 1999, it follows an exhausted paramedic through three difficult nights in Manhattan.

Yet its reputation reaches beyond that early box office disappointment. In its ranking of Scorsese’s movies, British GQ called it “arguably Scorsese’s most under-appreciated film,” while placing it 22nd.

Who does Nicolas Cage play in Bringing Out the Dead?

At the center, Cage plays Frank Pierce, an ambulance worker haunted by patients he could not save. Meanwhile, his lack of sleep makes each emergency harder, blurring the line between what he sees and what he fears.

Alongside Cage, Patricia Arquette plays Mary Burke, whose father becomes one of Frank’s patients. Across his shifts, John Goodman, Ving Rhames and Tom Sizemore play partners with different ways of handling the job’s daily demands.

Behind the camera, Scorsese reunited with screenwriter Paul Schrader, who adapted Joe Connelly’s 1998 novel. Previously, the pair had worked together on Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The Last Temptation of Christ.

Why was this Martin Scorsese film so personal?

Later, Scorsese explained that the story touched experiences from his own family life. Speaking to Roger Ebert, he said, “I had 10 years of ambulances.”

Then, he continued, “My parents, in and out of hospitals. Calls in the middle of the night. I was exorcising all of that.”

Still, the film found an important supporter when it first opened: Ebert gave it four stars. His review praised Scorsese’s commitment to difficult material rather than treating the darkness as a reason to look away.

Meanwhile, a 2024 anniversary essay on RogerEbert.com explored the film’s focus on compassion, guilt and faith. That reading helps explain why Frank’s need to help matters as much as the emergencies themselves.
