More than three decades after it hit theaters, one of Woody Harrelson’s ’90s action movies is suddenly finding a new audience on Netflix.
Money Train, the 1995 action comedy starring Harrelson and Wesley Snipes, is currently No. 6 on Netflix’s worldwide movie chart, according to FlixPatrol’s Oct. 28 rankings. It sits among newer releases including Surviving Hurricane Otis, Animals, and Armored.
The movie has also climbed the worldwide chart in recent days, moving into the No. 6 spot after previously ranking No. 10.
What Is ‘Money Train’ About?
Harrelson stars as Charlie Robinson, a New York transit cop who works alongside his foster brother, John Robinson, played by Snipes.
The two get caught up in a dangerous plan involving the city’s subway “money train,” which transports millions of dollars collected from subway stations. When Charlie decides to rob the heavily guarded train, John has to decide whether to stop his brother or join him.
Jennifer Lopez also stars as Grace Santiago, a fellow transit cop who becomes involved with both brothers.
The movie reunited Snipes and Harrelson three years after the pair starred together in White Men Can’t Jump, another popular ’90s movie.
‘Money Train’ Wasn’t a Hit When It Was Released
Despite its star power, Money Train wasn’t particularly well received when it arrived in theaters in November 1995.
The movie currently has a 22% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 32 reviews. It earned approximately $77.2 million worldwide against a reported $68 million production budget.
That hasn’t stopped the movie from developing a cult following over the years, and its current Netflix resurgence gives viewers another chance to revisit the ’90s action flick.
The movie also has a surprisingly elaborate production history. According to Film Stories, filmmakers built a massive replica New York subway set in Los Angeles because shooting the entire production on the real subway system proved impractical. The production even used 15 New York subway cars that were transported to California and modified for filming.
