Hit Video Game ‘Death Stranding’ Is Getting an Anime Series on Disney+

Disney+ is bringing Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding to the screen, turning the wonderfully weird post-apocalyptic world into anime. The new series, Death Stranding Isolations, is set to premiere in 2027, and the first teaser indicates that running away from ghostly monsters and the aging rain will be just as unpleasant in animation.

Disney+ released the teaser Thursday, giving a peek into a world where humanity is fighting to survive against supernatural threats. The preview opens with a blond girl waking from a nightmare in which a monstrous pool of tar swallows her up. It’s not exactly the thing you’d want to see before bed.

It is based on the 2019 video game Death Stranding and its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, in 2025. Both games were the work of Kojima, the celebrated Japanese game designer known for his unconventional storytelling and cinematic approach to video games.

Death Stranding Isolations Takes Us Back to a Broken America

The anime takes place in North America, after Sam Bridges has reunited the continent using the Chiral Network. But rebuilding those connections gives us hope for humanity, and also brings about unforeseen consequences.

The official synopsis says the story follows people who take a different path than Sam and his fellow members of Bridges. One of the protagonists is a girl who chooses to cut off all ties with the outside world.

That makes sense in a universe where a walk outside can mean coming across BTs, or Beached Things, ghostly creatures that are deadly. Survivors must also deal with timefall, a weird type of rain that accelerates the aging process. Therefore, not even looking at the weather forecast will help you here.

The teaser doesn’t reveal much of the larger story, but it sets up the spooky atmosphere that fans expect from the franchise.

One of the biggest names associated with Death Stranding is Norman Reedus, who plays Sam Bridges in the games. The games also star performances from Léa Seydoux and Troy Baker.

Death Stranding Isolations is coming to Disney+ in 2027. Until then, fans have plenty of time to speculate about how the anime will flesh out Kojima’s strange, unsettling universe.
