James Cameron’s 1986 Sci-Fi Horror Classic With a 93% Rotten Tomatoes Score and Two Oscar Wins Arrives on Hulu November 1

James Cameron’s Aliens arrives on Hulu on November 1, adding a nightmare.

Meanwhile, Hulu marks the 1986 sequel’s arrival as a 40th anniversary addition. Beyond its fame, the film holds a 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also won two Oscars, though some of its most interesting stories happened away from the cameras.

Sigourney Weaver nearly rejected Aliens’ biggest weapons

Initially, Weaver loved Cameron’s script but missed how much gunfire filled its stage directions. However, her support for gun control made that discovery a concern when she returned as Ellen Ripley.

Speaking to The Ringer in 2022, she recalled her reaction.

“First of all, I didn’t know there’d be machine guns in it,” she said. “And I had worked for gun control for a number of years.”

Instead of dismissing her worries, Cameron took her to a shooting range.

Afterward, Weaver said the experience helped her understand the energy those weapons brought to the role. While it did not erase her beliefs about firearms, she found a way to play the character while keeping her concerns at bay.

Aliens earned Sigourney Weaver an unusual Oscar nod

Later, the Academy nominated Weaver for best actress, recognizing a performance built around fear, anger, and fierce care. Although she lost to Marlee Matlin for Children of a Lesser God, the nomination put her genre work alongside prestige dramas.

Alongside that acting nod, Aliens collected six other nominations at the 1987 ceremony. Ultimately, Don Sharpe won sound effects editing, while Robert Skotak, Stan Winston, John Richardson, and Suzanne Benson won visual effects.

Meanwhile, James Horner’s music also earned a nomination, as did the film’s editing, sound, and art direction. Together, those categories show how many crafts supported the finished movie.

Finally, the film’s return to Hulu will give viewers another chance to appreciate that teamwork, even in its loudest moments.
